Beginner’s guide to growing your following and being found on social media.
Social Media can be daunting to business owners. One thing you can do is start out by asking some questions. Which platforms are best for me to use to be found on social media? How often should I post? When should I post? What should I post about?
Don’t be discouraged if this is overwhelming. With time and patience, it can be done. With that said, let’s dive in.
1. Decide which social media platforms are best for your business. Not every platform will provide you with the audience you seek. What age range are you looking to target? What type of content will your business use? How often will you want to post this content? Will you use images or videos? Are you a Vlogger? Blogger? A small business trying to reach a local audience? Each question helps determine which platform/s should be used to be found on social media.
2. Know your platform’s audience. Know where your audience is likely to hang out. Facebook is a no brainer. With over 2 billion monthly active users, every business should be on Facebook. Are you looking to reach a younger crowd? Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat are platforms that are geared to a unique audience.

3. Learn which content works best of each platform. Instagram, for instance, is picture based. It also supports short videos between 3 – 60 seconds. Understand which content you will need to post to which platform to get the best results for your business and allow you to be found on social media.
4. Optimize your profiles. Provide as much business information as you can on each of your social media profiles. Include your address, phone number, business hours, website and any other information vital to a potential customer choosing your company.

6. Schedule. The next crucial step is to schedule out the content you gathered. Depending on the platform, you will schedule several different ways. Some platforms like Twitter, need to be posted on at least once a day whereas, other platforms could be once a week to once every two weeks. The goal here is to get valuable content into the hands of your audience without overwhelming them with useless information.
There are scheduling tools like Loomly, Social Report, Buffer, Hootsuite that allow you to set up an automatic post schedule. Once you set it, you can forget it until it’s time to add to it.
7. Use Facebook Ads. Facebook has a really great tool on its business end that allows you to get your products/services/content onto the feeds of your intended audience. The money spent here, when used in conjunction with a well-targeted audience, can increase your web traffic. Web traffic can then convert into sales.
8. Social Listening is exactly what it sounds like. You are constantly listening for the company name on social media. Whether it be compliments, complaints, shout outs, or recommendations always make it your top priority to reach out and respond to each person that takes the time to mention your business name.
Not only does it make each person feel important, but it also helps build your reputation as a company that has great customer service.
9. Start a Contest or Giveaway. The best traffic is organic traffic! Facebook’s algorithm loves to see traffic. It tells Facebook that you are posting relevant information to your target audience and therefore, will show it to more people. 10. Create a Facebook Group. Have a business that interacts with the audience daily? Facebook groups can help to grow your audience and build trust with your product/service. Do you sell a product that you often discount? Or have overstock? Facebook groups could be used to post special sales, promotions, coupon codes, and many others
Bonus: Use Images!
A post, article, blog, or just text is often received better by using a creative image. Sharing high-quality, relevant images with your fan base will always resonate better than plain text. They are easier to consume. Images are the #1 shared content on FB by a whopping 87% (Maranga, 2014).
